Inside the social toolbelt of a PRI’s The World journalist

Today is my last day at The World. I’ve been in this newsroom since February 2012, and in this role since September of that year. I’ve learned so much from the world-class reporters in this room and we’ve learned a lot together.

As I was gathering my things, I came across a list of the 60+ social media challenges that I’ve run with the newsroom — baby steps of social journalism that have amounted to a strong skill set among The World’s producers, reporters and editors.

This presentation summarizes my favorite challenges, and the social journalism skill learned from each.

These challenges have been the most fun I’ve had here. Each challenge, someone new seemed to shine, proving that reporters can pick and choose what is helpful for their work.

To the newsroom: Thank you for your enthusiasm, your professionalism, and your willingness to try new things. It is a combination rarely found anywhere, never mind in a fast paced, high stakes public radio newsroom.

If you’re interested in the full list of social journalism challenges that we ran, send me a message.
